It was supposed to be a spectacular end to a great day of tennis but Berrettini was forced to withdraw from his match against Tsitsipas due to an abdominal strain.
It was a great day of tennis at the Australian Open where we saw Russian duo Rublev and Medvedev advance to the quarterfinals. Then it was Nadal against Fognini and the Spaniard proved too good for the Italian winning in straight sets. It was down to Matteo Berrettini to defend the honour of Italy but he could not step onto the court.
About an hour before the match was scheduled to start the information broke that Berrettini has withdrawn from the match due to an abdominal strain. His fitness heading into this match had been in question as he struggled with an undisclosed injury in the previous round. Now that injury has forced him to withdraw completely which is disappointing to him and many tennis fans.
Tsitsipas moves on to the quarterfinals without tasting any tennis today which will give him more time to prepare for his match against Nadal. It's a tough matchup for him but he has had chances to beat Rafael Nadal in the past so he will enjoy another opportunity. No comments have been made so far. Stay tuned.
