A good weekend of tennis happened in the Davis Cup and many favourites reached the finals including the USA and Croatia Davis Cup teams.
USA - Uzbekistan
The United States hosted Uzbekistan in Honolulu which is a curious choice for a tennis venue but not so much when you think about it. The American players play best on outdoor hard courts while the Uzbekistanis play on indoor hard courts. So Hawaii and its nice weather became an obvious choice and it proved to be a good one. A new look American team lead by
Taylor Fritz and Reilly Opelka had no issues against the Uzbekistanis whom they swept with 4-0.
Croatia - India
Croatia is a tennis nation who takes the
Davis Cup seriously and it did so again. Marin Cilic happily reported to duty and delivered for his Nation winning both singles matches. The 2nd one, in particular, was a majestic display over Nagal 6-0 6-1. The Indians managed to snatch a point in the doubles but it wasn't enough as they were blown away in the singles matches. The end result was a solid 3-1 victory for Croatia who can be a scary team especially if Coric returns to form.
Colombia - Argentina
Somewhat of an upset in the
Davis Cup happened in Bogota where Colombia defeated Argentina. When we compare the teams side by side Argentina should have the edge despite missing Schwartzmann. Colombia did play at home and it proved key. The atmosphere was amazing and their fans carried their team to a stunning 3-1 victory over Argentina.
Slovakia - Czech Republic
A fascinating
Davis Cup match-up unfolded in Bratislava where Slovakia played hosts to the Czech Republic. The smaller of the two nations had difficulties against their neighbours and ultimately lost 3-1. The Slovakians where a slight favourites as their team overall is better than the Czech's but they couldn't replicate the expected level on the court. The Slovakian choose to play on clay courts a decision they possibly regret but even so they should have won it overall.
Hungary - Belgium
The most
interesting matchup was between Hungary and Belgium. It delivered as we saw the full 5 matches with Hungary barely getting the victory 3-2. The Hungarians were heavy favourites at home especially since Goffin decided not to play for Belgium. They struggled however massively especially when playing against Bemelmans. He almost won it for Belgium but Fucsovics managed to prevail to secure the victory for the Hungarians.
