Dan Evans is famous for making controversial remarks. The 35-year-old did something similar after his journey in the Eastbourne Open with a defeat to America’s Jenson Brooksby in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
After the match, while shaking hands, Brooksby could be heard saying: “Well played, good match.” In response to that, Evans was quick to remind his opponent that he was aware of how poorly he performed in the match, where he failed to convert a single break point and won just 38 points, 25 less than Brooksby. “Was it? It wasn’t from me,” he said.
Brooksby decided not to react to those comments and instead walked away to continue celebrating his win in the quarterfinal of the competition. Despite not having a lot of success on the court, Evans continues to make bold and, at times, controversial comments. Recently, Evans spoke to The Daily Mail, where he lambasted players who complained about suffering from fatigue due to a demanding tennis schedule. During the same interview, Evans stated that he feels better prepared for the grass court this season compared to last year.
“In general I am fed up with sportspeople who, when they lose, there is an issue. Just f***ing shake the guy’s hand and say well done,” he said. “This day and age somebody is never better than us. It’s always, we are tired. If you’re sick, you’re sick. That’s part of being a tennis player. Tiredness, the schedule - you can take time off. It’s not an excuse. You have lost. That is it. Pull your calf in the first match you lose. It’s sport, isn’t it? Last year was a rush, no doubt about that. I took a little bit longer than expected to recover. I was just a bit behind in preparation - it sounds like I am making excuses after what I have just said! In hindsight, playing the Olympics was probably not the best thing for my body but that is what I wanted to do and, I’ve said many times, that was the best thing I have ever done and it would be hard to top that. It’s nice this year to be fully fit.”
