Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has accidentally hit himself with
the racket in frustration during the Paris Masters. The 28-year-old was featured
in the round of 32 clash of the competition on Wednesday against Australia’s Alexei
Popyrin.
That outing did not go as planned, as Medvedev ended up on
the losing side with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. During the contest, the world
number five ended up making 14 double faults, 11 more than his opponent. That
led to Medvedev’s frustration as he accidentally hit himself with the racket.
The video went viral on the social media platform as well.
This is not Medvedev's first involvement in such an incident.
Earlier this year, during the Laver Cup, the Moscow-born threw his racket in
anger, but luckily, it did not hit anyone. After that incident, Team World captain
John McEnroe and other participants complained to the match official and asked
him to disqualify Medvedev.
The result on Wednesday is another disappointing result for
the Russian tennis star, who is not having a great season on the court. Even
though Medvedev has won 45 out of 61 matches this year, but has not managed to
lift any title. He played in the final of two events but on both occasions, he
ended on the losing side.
His first final of the competition this year came in
Melbourne, where he finished as the runner-up after losing to Italy’s Jannik
Sinner in a five-set thriller with a score of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. His
second final defeat came in Indian Wells, where Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz proved
too hot to handle as he emerged victorious in straight sets with a score of 7-6,
6-1. Recently, Medvedev also played in the semifinal of the China Open, where
he came second-best against Alcaraz once again in straight sets with a score of
7-5, 6-3.
