Former World No.3
Stan Wawrinka has won three of the four Grand Slam trophies during his illustrious career. Now the Swiss ace can finally add the elusive final Major title to his trophy cabinet. Well, sort of.
Wawrinka is one of the few players to have won multiple Grand Slam trophies during the Big Three era. The Lausanne native captured titles at the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open. However, he has never been able to win the
Wimbledon title, with his best performance being a quarterfinal appearance in 2014 and 2015.
A replica of the Wimbledon trophy will ease the pain, says Wawrinka
The 39-year has come to terms with his inability to win the elusive grass Grand Slam title. Knowing that his career is coming to an end, Wawrinka admitted there was zero chance of him ever winning a SW19 title. Therefore, he opted for the next best thing; a miniature replica trophy from the on-site gift shop to complete his collection.
“I went to the shop to buy it, to have the small one at home,” Wawrinka admitted on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast. “Yes, to have the four. At least I have the four at home. All the other Slams and then just the tiny one. But I have it.”
The Swiss star defeated Brit Charles Broom in straight sets during his first round match. Wawrinka faces good friend
Gael Monfils in the second round, where he trailed the Frenchman by two sets to love before the match was suspended due to darkness.
