Germany’s
Alexander Zverev was handed a real thrashing at the
Omnium Banque Nationale Canadian Open in Montreal.
The 26-year-old suffered a heavy defeat against Spain’s Alejandro
Davidovich Fokina on Wednesday in the round of 32 with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
It was Zverev’s joint-worst defeat in the ATP tour where he
ended up winning just three games in the whole match.
The last time when the Hamburg-born failed to win more than
three games in a match was five years back in 2018 when he lost to Karen
Khachanov in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters.
Another time when Zverev suffered such a defeat was again in
2018 when he was thrashed by current world number two Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in
the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters.
The result will serve as a severe blow to the preparations of
the world number 16 for the upcoming US Open which is set to begin in less than
20 days' time.
The former world number two’s best record in any Grand Slam
is at the US Open where he played the final of the mega-event back in 2020. He
was defeated by Austria’s Dominic Thiem in a five-set thriller with a score of 2–6,
4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6(8–6).
