Former world number one
Caroline Wozniacki has heaped praise
on fellow Denish player
Holger Rune.
The 20-year-old is one of the most highly-rated youngsters
in the circuit along with current world number one Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and
Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
Wozniacki, who recently returned to the court after a gap of
more than three years was recently quoted in a report where she heaped praise
on the youngster and believes that Rune always had ‘something special’ about
him.
“I had a lot of respect for him already,” she said. “Years
ago when I first saw him, I knew he was a hard worker. He wanted this really
badly. I knew that he would ask questions & see what he could do better. I
just knew that there was something special about that”
Those words will be a huge compliment for Rune who, despite
all his talent, is yet to deliver at the biggest stage.
The Gentofte-born has never played in the semifinal or
beyond in any of the four Grand Slams.
To date, his best performances at the mega events were
reaching the quarterfinal of the French Open — in 2022 and 2023 — and Wimbledon
earlier this year.
Rune will be hoping that he will be able to improve his
record while playing at the US Open where his best outing was reaching the
third round last year.
