Alexander Zverev had to dig deep in order to beat American Marcos Giron in his
Australian Open round 1 match and afterwards Sasha said he was glad to get through.
It took almost three hours for Zverev to overcome Giron in the Australian Open first round and following the match Zverev said:
“He played incredibly well and played really well on the big stage against a Top 10 player."
It was truly a strong display from Giron who could have gotten up 2-0 which is something that Zverev wanted to avoid at all costs. Ultimately he did and on that he said:
"He had me on the ropes and the second set could have gone either way. I didn't want to go two sets down. I am happy to get through and in the end, I played better. The first round of a Slam is never easy.”
Sasha, along with many others, was naturally asked about playing in front of fans again to which Alexander answered:
“I think it's incredible to play in front of fans again. That's something that we missed over the last year or so."
Zverev also made a point that he played better as the match went on which he said was a positive for him. And indeed he looked better and better as time went on and deservedly moved to the next round. Check out the press conference below:
