Anna Kalinskaya who is top seed during this week's Singapore Tennis Open has continued her injury hell with the World No.18 deciding to retire after the opening set over Ann Li who moves into the final in Singapore.
Kalinskaya lost the first set 6-7 and received courtside treatment on her right thigh before the start of the second set. Li claimed the first game of the second set before Kalinskaya then retired only 59 minutes into the match.
But the Russian who has been the top name in action this week in Singapore who was seen as favourite has had a rough start to the 2025 season losing her opener at the Brisbane International before retiring in Adelaide in Belinda Bencic due to illness.
A virus also forced her to withdraw from the Australian Open at the 11th hour which also allowed Eva Lys into the tournament who reached the Last 16.
Li will play either Wang Xinyu or Elise Mertens in the final on February 2nd as she seeks her first title since 2021. It is likely to be Mertens after the Belgian went a set and a break up against the Chinese ace who endured a marathon against Jil Teichmann yesterday.
But it is not the week Kalinskaya would've wanted so close to her first title on the WTA Tour. An issue which has blighted her since her emergence. She will have to defend her Dubai final points in the coming weeks and this isn't exactly the best indictment especially with the title just there in a poorer field.
Get well soon Anna 💜
