It is two matches and two defeats for Iga Swiatek's Eagles team at the World Tennis League with only one win from their tally today against Aryna Sabalenka's Hawks team.
Hawks now lead the way in the standings with 47 points having accrued one win and one defeat. Albeit with every point counting, the win and loss column doesn't mean as much. Sabalenka started off the day winning both of the opening two matches emphatically.
She starred alongside Mirra Andreeva in a 6-1 win in doubles against Swiatek and Paula Badosa. A Badosa that would figure in their singles as the World No.1 won 6-2. But yesterday saw it fall apart when the male players took to the court as they lost despite two early defeats.
Sumit Nagal played the remaining two matches as he teamed with Jordan Thompson to beat Alexander Shevchenko and the lesser spotted Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4. Priorly the Greek didn't play yesterday so it was intriguing to see him on court.
But he again backed out of one of the two not playing singles as this was left to Shevchenko who won 6-2 against Nagal. But the tie was basically sewn up anyway. It went to overtime which essentially is completed when the leader wins a game and so in this case Nagal won the second so the tie was completed.
This negated the need for overtime and saw Hawks handed the win. Falcons will now face Kites shortly. The former won yesterday with Andrey Rublev leading from the front. They also feature Elena Rybakina, Caroline Garcia and Denis Shapovalov.
While Kites feature Jasmine Paolini as well as Casper Ruud, Nick Kyrgios and Simona Halep. The Aussie didn't play yesterday while Paolini played nearly all the matches aside from of course men's singles. So those line-ups will be intriguing.
