Wimbledon 2023 is set to begin from today (Monday) in London
where players from all over the globe will battle it out to lift the trophy.
Just like every year, fans are showing immense interest in
the third Grand Slam of the year, the only one to be played on a grass court.
A page on the social media platform Twitter with the name of
The
Tennis Letter asked the fans to predict the winner of the mega-event in London.
The response was an interesting one where the vast majority predicted
Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic to win the men’s singles title and world number two Aryna
Sabalenka to win the women’s singles title.
As far as Djokovic was concerned, the response was a
predicted one considering he is the defending champion this time around and has
won the title on four consecutive occasions since 2018.
His last defeat in Wimbledon was in the quarterfinals stage in
2017 when he was forced to retire against Tomas Berdych due to an arm injury.
However, Sabalenka’s name from the fans was indeed a
surprising one as she was picked ahead of number one seed Poland’s
Iga Swiatek and
defending champion Kazakhstan’s
Elena Rybakina.
It was also surprising because the 25-year-old has never
played in the Wimbledon final before as her best performance in the competition
was playing the semifinal back in 2021 where she suffered a defeat against Czech
Republic’s Karolina Pliskova with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Djokovic will start his Wimbledon 2023 campaign against
Argentina’s Pedro Cachin on Monday whereas Sabalenka’s opener will be up
against Hungary’s Panna Udvardy on Tuesday.
