The Brazilian chair umpire Carlos Bernardes suffered a heart attack on Wednesday in Melbourne and was taken to hospital from View Melbourne, reportedly feeling stable.
Like most of the players, Bernardes has spent the previous week in the Melbourne bubble, preparing for the upcoming Australian Open, where he already served as an umpire many times before. Bernardes has been active since 1990 and has had the opportunity to lead many entertaining encounters over the past 30 years. Carlos was the chair umpire during the men's US Open finals in 2006 and 2008, the 2011 Wimbledon final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and that memorable 2016 ATP Finals title match between Djokovic and Andy Murray.
