Mirra
Andreeva and Alex Michelsen made the most significant leaps into the top 100 on
the WTA and ATP Tour, respectively, over the past year. Both teenagers achieved
the most substantial advancements in their rankings, entering the top 100 for
the first time in their careers in 2023.
In the
women's category, the standout surprise was 16-year-old Russian player Mirra
Andreeva, who ascended from the world No. 405 to the 46th position in 2023.
Andreeva, who was still competing in junior categories, made waves during the
clay season by reaching the fourth round of the WTA 1000 Madrid, the third
round in the French Open, and the fourth round at Wimbledon. These achievements
propelled her into the top 50.
On the
men's side, 19-year-old Alex Michelsen experienced an even more remarkable
jump, advancing over 500 positions from No. 601 to No. 97. The North American
player reached the final of the ATP 250 Newport Open in only his second main
draw appearance in an ATP tournament. Michelsen also secured two Challenger
titles, allowing him to finish the year as the youngest player in the top 100.
