As the whole ATP and WTA Tours are suspended until 13th July 2020, organizers of the Madrid Open came up with an interesting solution. They have decided to create a tournament that players will play from home - Virtual Madrid Open.
16 ATP players (Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Gael Monfils, David Goffin, Kei Nishikori, Fabio Fognini, Diego Schwartzman, Denis Shapovalov, Karen Khachanov, John Isner, Lucas Pouille, David Ferrer and Frances Tiafoe) and 16 WTA players (Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Bianca Andreescu Belinda Bencic, Kiki Bertens, Dona Vekic Angelique Kerber, Madison Keys, Kristina Mladenovic, Carla Suárez, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki Johanna Konta, Fiona Ferro, Eugenie Bouchard, and Sorana Cirstea) will compete in the competition.
As usual, during tennis tournaments, there will be 2 draws, one for ATP players and another for WTA players. There will be also a prize money of 150 000€ for ATP and 150 000€ for WTA competition. The winners will decide how much they want to donate to players that are having financial problems at the moment. The Virtual Madrid Open will donate another 50 000€ to help the Madrid Food Bank.
The whole competition will begin on Monday 27th April at 15:00 with the draw. You can watch the stream on Facebook on the official Madrid Open page. The competition will go live also on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the same time.
