World No.1 Ashleigh Barty is set to be honored with the prestigious Newcombe Medal in her native country of Australia for the fourth straight time, after the award was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.
The Queenslander will be recognized following another impressive season, announced Tennis Australia on Monday. Barty captured five trophies this year, including her second Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships.
The awards ceremony will be held remotely this year on December 17, due to the rising Covid rates in Victoria. Barty will be the first player since Samantha Stosur to capture four Newcombe Medals, let alone in succession, eclipsing Stosur's hat-trick from 2010 to 2012.
The 25-year old called an early end to her season after the US Open, opting to return home and prepare for next year's Australian Open.
