Playing her first match since the US Open, world number one Ashleigh Barty comes back from 4-6, *2-4, 40-AD to beat Coco Gauff 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 and reach the QFs in Adelaide. She will face Tomljanovic or Kenin on Friday.
Coco Gauff is a very strong and talented tennis player and she almost pulled off the upset against world number one Ashleigh Barty but the Australian rallied to win 4-6 7-5 6-1. Ashleigh Barty entered the match with the mantle of the favorite yet early on she did not play too well. The Australian player really struggled with her 2nd serve as she was unable to hold off Gauff.
The American had a clear intention of attacking every 2nd serve and it worked with great success. She won 12 of 18 of those points which is what allowed her to win the opening set with 6-4. That worked early on in the 2nd as well as Gauff was once again able to win take the lead with 4-2. Things changed quickly after that with Gauff dropping off considerably in a crucial moment.
She had the victory in hand but failed to see it through has Barty grabbed the final opportunity to come back into the match. After turning it around to 5-4 Barty was able to win the set with 7-5. She was superb in crucial rallies saving 5 of 6 break points she faced while converting both Gauff gave her. That loss of set affected Gauff who continued er slide.
Barty was playing stronger and with more confidence as the match went on with Gauff going the opposite way. It was a dramatic difference compared to the start of the match and it clearly had to do with confidence. Barty did play better, but Guaff completely collapsed after taking a 4-2 lead in the match, and regrettably, it's not the first time that has happened to her.
