The decision to suspend all WTA events in China by the WTA was met with heavy criticism in China and the latest to do so is the state-affiliated media outlet Global Times.
The editor in chief of the newspaper Hu Xijin wrote a long piece heavily criticizing the WTA for using
Peng Shuai to support the 'West's attack on China'. He was not the only one of as the foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said of the move:
"We are firmly opposed to acts politicizing sport. We are all thinking of her and hoping that everything will be OK."
The piece in the Global news reads:
“WTA is coercing Peng Shuai to support the West’s attack on the Chinese system. They are depriving Peng Shuai’s freedom of expression, demanding
that her description of her current situation must meet their
expectation. The report accused the WTA of acting on behalf of 'the
West'. The WTA has acted as a lever of Western public opinion
against China’s political system. To this end, they repeat
the old tricks and once again set the precedent of boycotting sports
events for political purposes. This creates new uncertainties for international sports"
