Anastasia Gasanova recently heavily criticized Ukraine in a social media post detailing her life in the country as a promising tennis player.
Gasanova took to social media to share what her life in Ukraine has been especially in the city of Odesa. Many news outlets reported the comments deeming them as Russian propaganda despite Gasanova insisting it was her lived experience.
She said:
I tell everything from the first person, what specifically I or my closest friends have seen. We were forced to leave Ukraine. According to eyewitnesses, the Armed Forces of Ukraine killed people for speaking Russian, After May 2, 2014, it was impossible to wear Russian national team clothing, because they could shoot you unceremoniously."
She continued:
"God didn't give them brains, unfortunately- Why are they so happy? If they want to take back Crimea... breaking is not building. It wasn't the way you've been told...there were massive protests there and they say that President Viktor Yanukovych fled the country when what happened is They threatened to kill him."
Ukranian player Yastremska who is a Odesa native responded:
"In her posts Gasanova repeated, supported with her words, one of the justifications to start the invasion. She said that she could have been shot in Odesa for speaking Russian. This is a complete lie. Odesa is my hometown. I live all my life in Odesa. The vast majority here speak Russian and nobody ever had problems with that. This is a complete lie and nonsense said in order to justify Russia's invasion."
