After reaching the Melbourne fourth round at 15 last year, Coco Gauff is off to a winning start of another Australian Open campaign, beating Jil Teichmann 6-3, 6-2 in 57 minutes.
The young American served at 72% and lost 11 points behind the initial shot, fending off both break points to keep the pressure on the other side. Teichmann couldn't follow those numbers, suffering three breaks from as many chances offered to Gauff to propel a teenager through.
After five comfortable holds on both sides, Cori grabbed a break at love to open a 4-2 gap and saved two break chances in the next one to move 5-2 ahead. Serving for the set at 5-3, the American blasted service winners to seal the opener in 27 minutes, hoping for more in set number two.
Cori produced four comfortable holds and delivered two breaks to sail over the finish line, starting with a return game at the beginning of the set. The American broke at love in game five and sealed the deal at 5-2 to advance into the second round.
