Day 2 at the 2019 Hawaii Open brought another set of interesting matchups in which players fought for the spot in the final.
Successful quarterfinalist Brandon Nakashima faced world number 32, Taylor Fritz in the semifinal. Nakashima started the first set with a break on Fritz's service game, but Fritz got it back and the score was level. No player was able to take advantage of any more break points and so tie-break had to decide. There it was Nakashima who was successful when he won it 7-4. In the second set, Nakashima got a break and did not lose it later to win the set 6-4 and advance into the final.
In women's part, Danielle Collins and Yanina Wickmayer kicked-off the day. In the first set, we have seen 5 breaks, when Collins lost her service game twice, but Wickmayer 3 times and therefore she lost the set 6-3. In the second set, Collins had one break point, which she converted and earned an early lead. Then, Wickmayer had 10 break points, but she did not convert any of them and so Collins booked the final spot.
The only 3-set match during the day 2 decided about Nakashima's opponent in the final. Sam Querrey faced Jordan Thompson and despite losing the first set 4-6, the American fought back. He has won the second set 6-3 and then he dominated in a super tie-break when he won it 10-1 to reach the final in Hawaii.
The biggest star of the tournament, former world number one, Angelique Kerber took care of the last match. She faced Misaki Doi who was not a big problem for the German. She won the first set 6-1 in 26 minutes. And even though the second set reached tie-break, Kerber won it 7-2 and advanced into the final where she will meet Danielle Collins.
