America’s Emma Navarro registered her name in the list of women players with a unique feat after lifting the Merida Open. The 23-year-old secured the title with a comfortable win over Emiliana Arango in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
She has become the only fifth women’s player to win an ATP event without losing a single game in the final since 2000. The other players to achieve that were former French player Marion Bartoli, former Poland player Agnieszka Radwańska, Romania’s Simona Halep and the former world number one Poland’s Iga Swiatek.
Navarro had a perfect run in the competition, and she did not lose a single set. In the round of 16, she defeated Croatia’s Petra Martic with a score of 6-1, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, she got the better of Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinal, Navarro outclassed Columbia’s Elina Avanesyan in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
The victory was an important one for Navarro, who came into the competition on the back of a rather disappointing start to the 2025 season. Before playing in the Merida Open, the New York-born star featured in five different competitions but did not manage to cement a spot beyond the quarterfinals. Her most impressive performance this year before the recently concluded competition came at the Australian Open, where she was eventually knocked out after losing in the quarterfinal to Poland’s Swiatek in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
5 - Since 2000, Emma Navarro is only the fifth player to win a WTA event final by a 6-0 6-0 score:
