Britain’s
Emma Raducanu has revealed that she would prefer a
‘lie-in’ on the election day. The 2024 UK general elections will take place on Thursday, where two parties will compete to gain a majority in the parliament to form a government in the future.
Raducanu, who is currently participating in
Wimbledon 2024, was asked during the media interaction what she would do on election day. In response, the former world number 10 admitted that she forgot about the elections and that her plan would be to ‘lie in’. "No. I think I'll have a
lie-in, then I'll come to practice. I didn't even know it was tomorrow, to be
honest. Thanks for letting me know," she said.
Raducanu had an impressive start to her Wimbledon campaign
as she has already booked her place in the third round. The Toronto-born star
defeated Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in the opening round of the competition in
straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-3. In the second round, she got the better
of Belgium’s Elise Mertens in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Raducanu will face Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the round of 32
clash on Friday. The 28-year-old booked her place in the third round after
beating Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3. With
that win, the Athens-born star has equaled her best record while playing at
Wimbledon.
Despite being ranked number nine in the world, Sakkari has a very poor record at Grand Slams. In 33 attempts, she has only managed to play beyond the quarterfinal twice. This will only be the second meeting between the two at the highest level. Their only previous meeting came during the US Open in 2021, when Raducanu came out on top with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
