Emma Raducanu was able to win one match in the Slovenian coastal town of Portoroz before being upset by world number 213 Friedsam.
The German is a far better player than her ranking indicates as she was once firmly ranked inside the top 100 but she has not played well this year. Her ranking suffered in a similar manner to how Raducanu's suffered but the Brit squandered plenty of chances in this one.
Raducanu was hitting the ball really well but was rather inconsistent in this one. A 3-1 early lead turned to a 3-3 score after Friedsam was able to force Emma to make some bad choices. Raducanu still went up 5-3 and had four set points in total but failed to use either of them.
Friedsam broke back and went on to win the set 7-5 converting her first set point. It was just a very unserious finish from Raducanu who took way too many risks. The second set is one where she caught fire the way she can. Hitting the ball extremely well, Raducanu served a bagel to Friedsam forcing a 3rd set.
The German kind of tanked that set towards the end but she came out strong for the final one. Neither was able to create much pressure on return but eventually, Raducanu's accuracy started to dip and a lone break point was converted by Friedsam. She then closed it out 6-3 for the major upset.
A huge missed chance for Raducanu to go deep at an event with a fairly weak draw.
