Iga Swiatek is still at the top of WTA tennis but this year there have been a few players who threatened to break up the dominance though she doesn't care about that.
Swiatke has made a habit of mostly focusing on herself. It's a very healthy approach to tennis and probably one that is at the root of all of her success. Even so, we've seen other players step up and challenge her this year, much more than the last ear which obviously created some interesting narratives.
One of those is the so-called big three narratives which has Swiatek, Sabalenka and Rybakina as the three players clearly above the rest of the field. It's not something Swiatek pays attention to but that has been mostly the case so far this year. Those three players have played far better than the rest of the field.
Unbothered
Speaking recently, Swiatek compared the difference between this year and last year. Last year nobody asked her about other players but this year that's all she gets asked:
“Last year I wasn’t even asked about other players and this year I’m asked basically in every press conference a couple of times, even though they’re on the other side of the draw, there’s nothing really connecting us in this tournament — there’s always something around that’s implying that things are different."
She also confirmed her mantra to keep focusing on yourself which so far has worked rather brillianty for her:
“But you always have to come back to what it is you want to achieve because it has nothing to do with other players, even rankings sometimes. Because you want to win matches and tournaments, and rankings go up after that."
Switek also praised herself for staying consistent for over a year and holding the number one ranking:
“Even though the difference in points is smaller (between myself and the world No.2), I feel like it’s a great achievement for me to keep a consistent level with all that pressure. Because there is pressure; and you can see it on social media and everything."
