Canadian Leylah Fernandez seems to enjoy playing in Mexico, as the teenager added another scalp to her already impressive collection.
Fernandez faced 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the second round of the
Abierto GNP Seguros. The in-form teenager was coming off a
runner-up appearance in Acapulco, where she did not drop a set until the final.
Fernandez faced stiff opposition in Stephens, as the fifth-seeded American displayed some aggressive tennis to win the first set in a tiebreak. However, it was all Fernandez from that point onwards, who dominated the American to win the match 6-7(4) 6-3 6-3.
After this two hour encounter, Fernandez could face an even tougher test in World No.7 Elina Svitolina. The top seed battles Belarusian Olga Govortsova for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Sixth seed Rebecca Peterson defeated former Top-10 player Kateryna Bondarenko 7-6(2) 7-5 in just over two hours, while eighth seed Yafan Wang battled past Australian Astra Sharma 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3 to advance to the last eight.
Czech Marie Bouzkova made quick work of Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who
upset Venus Williams in the opening round. However, the ninth-seeded Czech was too much for Schmiedlova, breezing through 6-4 6-1 in just an hour and 22 minutes.
