After the Australian swing, the action quickly shifts continents, and in Transylvania, Cluj will host the first European tournament of the season, a WTA 250 featuring Emma Raducanu at the top. It will be held from February 2 to 8 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
The tournament is relatively young – with only five editions held so far – and previous champions include former world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit and former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova. This year, the defending champion is Anastasia Potapova, who will be one of the main draws of the tournament.
However, the biggest name in the main draw is former US Open champion Emma Raducanu, first seed and the only top-30 player in the draw. Her good ranking allows her to appear as first seed again – just like in Hobart two weeks ago. And it will be a good chance for the Brit to make a deep run, without the most prominent names of the Tour in the draw.
However, with an open draw, there will be several players looking to take advantage of their opportunity. Among the notable names are Xinyu Wang (who recently reached the round of 16 in Melbourne, eliminating two top-25 players), and the Romanians Jaqueline Cristian (No. 35) and Sorana Cirstea (No. 36) – who will aim to become the first local player to lift the title in Cluj.
Several young players will seek their opportunity in the draw, such as Croatian Antonia Ruzic (No. 67), German Ella Seidel (No. 82), or French Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah (No. 116). The 2025 finalist, Lucia Bronzetti, will arrive under significant pressure to defend last year’s points and avoid a steep drop in the rankings.
