The Spanish team was playing against Slovakia in their first match at the event and the tie was decided by the doubles match. Heading into the doubles match the score was 1-1 with Carla Suarez Navarro and Sara Sorribes Tormo taking the court for the Spaniards. They prevailed 4-6 6-2 10-7 to win the match for Spain and after the match Suarez Navarro was overjoyed.
The Spanish player will retire officially from tennis after the event and speaking to the Billie Jean King Cup website after the match she said:
"I am so happy. I lost the singles, but this tie is not only one match. I started again from zero in the doubles. It was really tough, and I had help from Sara and, in the end, we won a very difficult tie, and this is so important in this new event."
She further explained how emotional it was for her to put the Spanish shirt on:
“It is always emotional putting on the Spanish shirt, especially knowing it might be one of the last times I do before I retire. It is one of the best things in our sport to play for your country. I will fight until the end”.
She ocne again reitared her happines about the win saying:
“I am very, very happy and it has been an amazing day for me and for us all,” she said. “There are a lot of emotions, but I am just very happy with the way I played and managed my emotions.
