Victoria Azarenka secured her first WTA 1000 final at the BNP Paribas Open by overcoming Ostapenko in a tight 3-setter 3-6 5-3 7-5.
It was a very exciting and long match between Azarenka and Ostapenko in the BNP Paribas Open semifinal. Victoria Azarenka lost the first set against a very inspired Ostapenko only to come back and win the next two. She showed a lot of fight and after the match underlined that as the thing she is most proud of after the match:
"I thought the most important [thing], I would say today, was my fight, that I can be really proud of. Analyzing the game, it was a lot of probably things that I could have maybe done a little bit better."
Indeed it was not a perfect game for Azarenka but you will rarely ever have a perfect game in tennis. The most important thing is playing better than your opponent and Azarenka was able to do that:
"Overall she was playing really incredible in the first set, not giving me much to do. I was just trying to find opportunity, actually create opportunity, for me to get back into the match, to take a little bit more control in the match, really fight for every ball."
Azarenka also touched upon a very tricky season for her admitting that only now she has found the right balance in her game:
"I feel like right now I'm a bit more settled with a bit more structure, a little bit more discipline, which makes it not necessarily easier but a bit clearer what I need to do. So it doesn't take extra energy on that, so I can kind of focus my energy more on the fighting for every ball."
