Serena Williams held her pre-Wimbledon press conference and she stressed that she never considered retirement while also being unsure whether this is the last Wimbledon.
Williams announced her long-awaited return to tennis earlier this month after rumours of her impending retirement had started to circulate. She returned to action at Eastbourne last week –– partnering with Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the doubles. They played rather well but withdrew before the semifinal clash.
Speaking at Wimbledon, Serena admitted that she never considered retirement but rather needed time to heal mentally and physically:
“I didn’t retire. I just needed to heal physically, and mentally. And I had no plans, to be honest. I just didn’t know when I would come back. I didn’t know how I would come back. Obviously, Wimbledon is such a great place to be, and it just kind of worked out. I don’t know exactly when, but it was some time ago. Definitely not weeks. It was before the French Open."
Asked whether this will be her final Wimbledon she honestly replied:
“I don’t know. I can only tell you that I’m here. Who knows where I’ll pop up next. You just got to be ready.”
