America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff had to apologise to
the
Australian Open crowd after giving ‘too much information’ in her on-court
interview. The 20-year-old, who is already regarded as one of the best players
in the world in women’s tennis in the singles category along with the likes of
Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka and Poland’s Iga Swiatek, secured her place in the
round of 16 after beating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in straight sets with a
score of 6-4, 6-2.
Talking after the match, Gauff had an interesting interview
where she had to apologise to the Australian Open crowd after admitting that
she gave too much information and that she has no idea ‘when to shut up’.
Those comments came after she was asked whether the design of her outfit
matched the comfort as well. She stated that she would never compromise on her
comfort as that remains the number one priority.
“Yes. It’s definitely comfortable,” she said. “A lot of
people were wondering how I use the bathroom in it, so I posted a video on my
Instagram story… not like actually demonstrating! Just… No, that’s TMI! Sorry
guys! I don’t know when to shut up. The designers at New Balance are absolutely
incredible. We put together all the ideas that I want and they make a design
out of it. I promise you I’m not playing in anything uncomfortable because
comfort is always No. 1.”
Gauff will now face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in the
round of 16. The 27-year-old cemented her spot in the fourth round after being
awarded a walkover against the former world number one Japan’s Naomi Osaka, who
had to retire from the contest because of a fitness concern. The final score of
the match was 7-6. It will be the third meeting between the two players. In the
previous two meetings, both players won on one occasion each.
