Elina Svitolina has spoken against the
US Open decision to allow Russian and Belarusian players to compete at the event.
Svitolina is not the only one, pretty much most Ukrainian athletes have taken a very harsh and public stance against Russia and its athletes. It's quite natural and explainable considering the images of their native country getting torn up for no reason. There was always going be animosity and speaking to Reuters on the US Open decision to allow them o play, Svitolina said:
"It's their decision to make, they decided to take this path. I don't
support it because I feel like they should have taken more serious
action. Our
(Ukraine's) sports is thrown back by 10 years minimum because all the
infrastructure has been damaged or completely destroyed. I can tell you
many, many factors that can play a role in the decision of not letting
Russian and Belarusian players compete."
Nothing Svitolina said is wrong and it's quite a sensible point. While they may not be responsible for what is going on in Ukraine some of them did accept the decision of Wimbledon. Daria Kasatkina was most outspoken openly saying she was fine with it because she understands that some things are much more important than tennis.
