Swiatek: “When I was an underdog and I was building up my ranking, I was playing [aggressive]. When I reached Top 20, I was unsure. "But this year I want to go back to being aggressive and being proactive.” #AdelaideTennis
That was the recipe at the French Open two years ago where Swiatek demolished everyone en route to the final. Last year things changed a bit with the Polish player trying different things in her playstyle that are different from her signature aggressive style. When she did play aggressively she posted results such as the double bagel against Pliskova in Rome.
Speaking on the change she said:
“When I was an underdog and I was building up my ranking, I was playing [aggressive]. When I reached Top 20, I was unsure."
It confirms what many people have observed, a conscientious change in playstyle which did not work out too well for Swiatek. She still improved her ranking and played at the WTA Finals but she did not take a huge step forward as many expected. She is determined to change that in 2022 saying:
"But this year I want to go back to being aggressive and being proactive.”
Whether that works out remains to be seen but it's more in line with her natural way of playing tennis. A good indication will come in Australia as the courts down under traditional favor attacking play.
