Tennis analyst Gill Gross believes the problem faced by young
Grand Slam winners is the pressure they are put under after their initial
success.
The likes of Britain’s
Emma Raducanu and Canada’s Bianca
Andreescu have found it hard to keep on delivering after their early success.
Talking about that, Gross suggested that once players get
success at a young age, they find it hard to deliver because of the extra pressure
they are put under.
"The problem is, I just think there's a lot of
suffering after that, that I don't I wouldn't want like, once you win a Grand
Slam now," Gross said. "It's like, are you gonna win it again, you're
gonna win anything. I just feel like Emma Raducanu [and
Bianca Andreescu], it's
gonna be like, what's wrong with you?"
"I did it there, like I mean Emma Raducanu and Bianca
Andreescu, they both have to kind of deal with that. Now they have [won] it
very you know young in their career and they have to deal with that now. So no
thanks, no."
Britain’s Raducanu emerged to the scene in 2021 when she defeated
Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-4,
6-3 to lift the US Open title.
Since then, the 20-year-old has not managed to play in the
third round or beyond in any of the Grand Slams.
On the other hand, Canada’s Andreescu defeated legendary
tennis player the former world number one America’s Serena Williams in straight
sets with a score of 6-3, 7-5.
Since then, Andreescu has not played beyond the fourth round
of any of the Grand Slams and in the recently concluded Wimbledon 2023, she was
on the losing side in the third-round clash against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur with a
score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
