Seeds Elina Svitolina and Iga Swiatek are out of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells suffering defeats to Pegula and Ostapenko.
This day did not start off well for the seeds in Indian Wells as two are already out of the event. The first one to bow out was Elina Svitolina who played a horrible match against Jessica Pegula losing 1-6 1-6. Svitolina barely survived Cirstea and today she was completely exposed by Pegula. The American played very attacking hitting multiple winners in each game.
Svitolina took a MTO for what appeared a lower leg injury at the start of the 2nd set but it did not help. Pegula proceeded to smash her opponent in the 2nd set as well. The match lasted only 64 minutes and it saw the American drop only 9 points on her serve while converting 5 of 14 break points she had.
Similar to Svitolina, Iga Swiatek is also out of the event after getting beaten by Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 6-3. Swiatek offered some resistance but her performance was bleak in comparison to how she played the earlier rounds. Playing a very determined a good Ostapenko did not aid her cause as Swiatek rarely does when presented with a player that has even more aggressive play than she has.
Ostapenko was simply better in every facet of the game, especially in key rallies. She saved most of the break points she faced and Swiatek did not and that was simply the difference. The Polish player also took a MTO which indicates she might be injured but in the end, she finished off the match but she did not play well after the MTO at all.
