Iga Swiatek continues to make history in WTA 1000 tournaments by becoming the first player to achieve 25 consecutive appearances in the Round of 16 since the format's introduction in 2009. The World No. 2 has accumulated 10 WTA 1000 titles and is only surpassed by 5 players in the Open Era.
However, Swiatek’s consistency is something we haven’t seen in a while, after reaching the 4th round at the Miami Open. The last time she didn't make it past the third round was at the 2022 Cincinnati Open, after a year in which she secured 4 consecutive WTA 1000 titles.
Swiatek holds a record of 108-24 (82%) and is one of the best players in terms of consistency in these types of tournaments. In 34 appearances, she has won 10 titles, reached two other finals, and made at least 19 semifinal appearances.
The Polish player defeated Belgian Elise Mertens (27th) this Sunday and had already beaten Caroline Garcia, both in straight sets. The 5-time Grand Slam champion is probably the most consistent player in these types of tournaments, and after some disappointments in Qatar, Dubai, and Indian Wells, she is aiming for her first WTA 1000 title of the season.
Swiatek knows what it’s like to be a champion in Miami, having won the Sunshine Double in 2022, when she became World No. 1 for the first time in her career, just the week after Ashleigh Barty’s retirement, who was dominating the circuit at that time. Since then, Swiatek has continued to rack up wins and titles, although in recent months she has been surpassed by Aryna Sabalenka at the top of the rankings.
In the fourth round, she will face 22nd seed Elina Svitolina, who has previously upset her when she defeated Swiatek in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
