Iga Swiatek played her first hard court match since the 2022 Miami Open and the Polish player prevailed over Tomljanovic 6-1 6-2.
It was a happy return for Swiatek in North America and she was glad to be back. Swiatek started her ascension to number one during the Sunshine double when she went unbeaten winning those trophies back to back. A lot has happened since then for her but she returned as number one and it looked like she never left.
Taking on a fairly solid Tomljanovic who has a strong hard court game, Swiatek was able to thrash the Australian 6-1 in the opening set. She played better than Tomljanovic in all aspects and that score was the result. She served better, her groundstrokes were more precise, she returned better and overall it was just a display of dominance.
Things looked a bit better for Tomljanovic in the 2nd set as she was much more competitive but she was still no match for Swiatek over the course of the entire set. The first set games in the 2nd set featured five breaks but at the end of it, Swiatek emerged with a 4-2 lead. Tomljanovic was simply unable to win any points on her serve as every ball was attacked.
Most of them were pretty early winners and it was a strange thing to see considering that Tomljanovic has a fairly decent serve. Swiatek kept doing her thing and closed out the set 6-2.
