World number one Poland’s
Iga Swiatek will start her 2024 campaign
with a match in the United Cup in Perth, Australia.
The 22-year-old had a fabulous end to the season in 2023 as
she won the last major competition in the women’s singles category — the WTA Finals
— as she defeated America’s Jessica Pegula in the final with a score of 6-1,
6-0.
As per the latest report, Swiatek will start her 2024 campaign
with a match against Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil on December 30 in the United
Cup in Perth, Australia. It will be the third meeting between the two. In the
previous two meetings, both players managed to win one time each.
Swiatek had a bit of a rollercoaster ride in 2023 as she lost
her top spot in the WTA Ranking after losing in the fourth round of the US Open
but ended up reclaiming that after a win in Cancun, Mexico.
The highlight of the year for the Warsaw-born was winning
the French Open for the third time. She defeated Czech Republic’s Karolína
Muchova in the final with a score of 6–2, 5–7, 6–4.
Other than that, she also
played in the quarterfinal at Wimbledon where she lost to Ukraine’s Elina
Svitolina 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
