With several records already associated with her name, Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek can add another one after her convincing win over Caroline Garcia at the 2025 Miami Open.

The former World No.1 faced Garcia for the second consecutive time at a WTA 1000 event this year, after squaring off against the Frenchwoman in the second round at Indian Wells last week. The outcome remained the same, as Swiatek once again defeated Garcia in an impressive 6-2 7-5 victory.

Following her victory over Garcia, the reigning French Open champion has now won 25 consecutive opening matches at WTA 1000 events, ever since the new format was introduced in 2009. This puts her above 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who sits in second place with 23 straight opening round wins at that level.

Sharing second place with the American tennis legend is Belarusian tennis star and two-time Major champion Victoria Azarenka, who also has 23 consecutive wins in opening rounds at the WTA 1000 events, while retired Russian and five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova rounds out the top three with 19 consecutive opening round wins.

Swiatek is yet to win a title in 2025, having fallen short at the semifinal stage in Melbourne, Doha and Indian Wells. The 23-year old looked formidable during her run in the desert, but was stopped by eventual champion Mirra Andreeva in a thrilling three-set encounter.
