Two days before the start of the St. Petersburg Open world number 22 Kasatkina announced she tested positive for COVID-19 and won't play in the event.
It's a very disappointing development for Kasatkina who showed a lot of promise in Australia a couple of weeks ago scoring some important wins. Her ranking has improved to the best it has been in a while and she was excited to compete on native soil but a positive test completely derailed those plans. She announced the positive test herself saying:
"Hi everyone. I have some bad news. I arrived in St. Petersburg and tested positive for COVID-19. Right now I'm in complete isolation and following all the protocols."
The Russian is one of the many Russian players that were set to compete at the event but in the statement released she admitted that it's a pity to miss it:
"It's a pity to miss it. But (the) most important (thing) is to take care of yourself and others."
