First day of the Ostrava Open and an upset already as Alexandrova takes down Azarenka 6-4 4-6 6-2 to secure the 2nd round.
When you compared the reputation of the players it's certainly an upset but this result is somewhat logical. Alexandrova won the last event she played (Seoul) and she arrived with a lot of confidence here. Certainly more than Azarenka who has not played that well for a long time. Even so, it was the Belarusian who was better early.
Vika was up 4-2 in the opening set and by that time she was able to break Alexandrova twice while getting broke once. The Russian kept pushing and eventually she turned it around to take the opening set 4-6. Too much pressure from the Russian forced Azarenka into a corner and she could not find a solution.
Azarenka was much better in the second set and especially towards the end of the set. Early on both players had chances to break but neither took it. Down the stretch, Azarenka simply played better and took it 6-4. She didn't play as well in the final set as an early break set the tone for Alexandrova who added another break later on and cruised to a 6-2 finish.
