Emma Raducanu was forced to take a late MTO at a crucial time in the match and Leylah Fernandez was not happy about it expressing her frustration to the official.
When Emma Raducanu was serving for the match the young Fernandez played some stellar rallies to carve out a break point. During the really which Fernandez won, Raducanu slipped and slashed open her knee which started bleeding moderately. The British player notified the umpire Veljovic who stopped the match in order for Raducanu to get the wound bandaged.
Fernandez was not happy about it but explained her reasons after the match. She said:
"I honestly did not know what was happening with Emma. I didn’t know how serious her fall was, so that’s why I went to see the official and ask her about it. You know what, it just happened in the heat of the moment. It was just too bad that it happened in that specific moment with me, with the momentum."
Fernandez summed up her thoughts by saying:
"But it’s sports, it’s tennis. Just got to move on."
She has a fair point as the break came at a very unfortunate moment for her who was feeling her game and having a break point. But the stoppage was justified as the rule states that play is immediately suspended if a player starts bleeding which is a common practice in most professional sports.
