America’s tennis star
Jessica Pegula has stated that it is ‘crazy’
to face world number two
Aryna Sabalenka so soon again after meeting in the final of a WTA event
recently. The 30-year-old cemented her spot in the final of the fourth and
final Grand Slam of the year after beating the Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova
in straight sets with a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
With that result, Pegula set up a mouthwatering clash
against Belarus’ Sabalenka, who defeated America’s Emma Navarro in straight sets
with a score of 6-3, 7-6. It will be the second time both players will meet in
the final of an event in the last 30 days. Previously, the two met in the final
of the Cincinnati Open on August 19, where the world number two came out on top in
straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-5.
Talking after the match against Muchova, Pegula highlighted
that she is very happy to book a spot in the final of a Grand Slam for the first
time. The Buffalo-born star also highlighted that it is ‘crazy’ to face Sabalenka
so soon after facing her in the final of the Cincinnati Open less than a month
back.
"I mean first of all, I am just happy I was able to
turn this match around on such a big stage and figure it out,” she said. “But
two, playing Aryna is going to be really tough. I mean she showed how tough she
is, and why she's probably the favorite to win this tournament. It'll be a
rematch of Cincinnati, so hopefully I can get some revenge out here. But I am
happy to have a day off. It's kind of crazy that we're playing each other again
in the finals. But I think it shows how much great court tennis we've been
playing and she's gonna be obviously tough to beat. But that's what the finals
are for, so I am ready.”
