Beatriz Haddad Maia had some good moments in this match but for the most part, it was Ostapenko who dictated how the match went and she got it done in the end 6-2 4-6 6-3.
Ostapenko brought her devastating striking game to the match taking the ball really early and smashing Haddad Maia in the opening set 6-2. The Brazilian served pretty well but it didn't matter because Ostapenko simply overwhelmed her from the baseline with her supreme ball striking. All the crucial rallies were won by Ostapenko.
The second set was a bit different as Ostapenko wasn't nearly as sharp as she needed to be. It's nothing new as this is fairly common for her matches but Haddad Maia did well to counter her when her level started to rise again. The Latvian rushed a bit with her serve as the six double faults really didn't help her effort 4-6.
Haddad Maia carried that momentum into the 3rd set taking an early 2-0 lead which she held until a 3-1 lead. She couldn't hold on because Osptankoe relaxed and started to go for it and it worked. She went on a 5-0 run to take the match 6-3 with some incredible ball-striking. A superb comeback by the Latvian.
