Jelena Ostapenko plays one of the best weeks of her career, beats Veronika Kudermetova 6-0, 6-4 in the final to win the WTA 500 in Dubai. She will be ranked #13 next week, her best in more than three years.
A brilliant week from Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai concluded in the fairytale way as the Latvian defeated Veronika KUdermetova 6-0 6-4 to lift the trophy.
It's been a long wait for Ostapenko but finally, the Latvian will hoist another trophy up. After a brilliant week in Dubai, she earned herself the victory over Kudermezova with another superb display. Ostapenko is a very polarizing tennis player that rarely plays anything but aggressive and occasionally things fall into place nicely.
That happened this week for her as she dominated opponents the entire week. Her confidence grew with each match and performances got better and better. She displayed a very high level of calmness in her game not panicking when things don't go her way. Iga Swiatek served for the match against her, Kvitova nearly defeated her, Halep was up a set but nothing mattered.
Each time Ostapenko came back and won the match. Against Kudermetova, things started off nicely. The Latvian were bombarded from the baseline and the Russian was unable to handle it. First, it was 2-0, then 4-0 and ultimately a bagel. The 2nd set started off with a break for Kudermetova but Ostapenko once again did not panic and continued playing her game.
She fought her way back and ultimately won the 2nd set with 6-4. Neither player served well in this game and that proved costly for Kudermetova who needed to create pressure early on Ostapenko because once she was set, it was over.
