In one of the more bizarre matches of the tournament, third seed
Anett Kontaveit was bundled out of the
Miami Open in the second round by unseeded American Ann Li.
Li, currently ranked at World No.65, put on a herculean effort to stun the World No.7 6-0 3-6 6-4. After a completely dominant first set by the American, Kontaveit fought back to level the score. The Estonian raised the level of her game, and looked primed for a comeback victory after taking the second set.
With a 2-0 lead in the final set, it was Kontaveit who faltered as she let her opponent back into the game. Li took advantage of the Estonian's dip in form to level the score, and obtained the decisive break with Kontaveit serving to stay alive at 4-5.
Li will square off against compatriot Alison Riske in the third round, as the American prevailed in a 6-2 6-2 drubbing of France's Alize Cornet.
