The older American is playing some of the best tennis she has played in a long time to start 2022 and that continued in Adelaide with another good effort. She took down Coco Gauff 3-6 6-2 7-5 in a bit over two hours. The start of the match was fairly good by Gauff. The American kept it simple and played rather well. She patiently waited for her chance on Keys' 2nd serve and she saved all three break points she faced.
All of that was enough for a 6-3 1st set finish but a letdown came in the 2nd set. Gauff did not play much worse than in the 1st set as she had comparatively similar stats. She did not play the crucial rallies as well getting broken twice while failing to use any of the 5 break points she had. Keys was once again dominant on her first serve but also stepped up in crucial rallies.
The final set was a very interesting one. Both players played rather well and Gauff served extremely well. It's a rare thing for the young American to keep her serve in a high-pressure situation as usually tends to complicate things. Overall she played worse than Keys and was down 2-4 early. She fought back to make it 4-4 holding off several break points once more.
The problem for Gauff came at 5-6 when she complicated things with her serve. In very crucial moments she served a double fault to give Keys a match point which the American converted with a brilliant return. A great win for Keys and a final in Adelaide.
