LOCKED IN 🔒 No.5 seed @TheRealAParks gets over the line against Contreras Gomez 7-6(7), 3-6, 7-5 to move on in Mexico. #MéridaOpenAKRON
Alycia Parks had a late finish in Merdi after battling Contreras Gomez for three hours but it was a winning effort in the end 7-6(7) 3-6 7-5.
Parks had a really strong run indoors in Europe after the Australian Open and she hoped to continue that in Merida. It was a winning start but a really tough first match there against a really inspired native player. The first set went to a tiebreak as neither player was able to make a breakthrough. Parks won it 9-7 in the end and she was a bit lucky to escape with the set as she was the only player that faced break points.
The Mexican responded in the second set playing really well and taking it 6-3. Parks didn't serve well in the second set and much of her game is still built around the serve but that will get better with time. The final set was really similar to the first one as Parks once again had to save multiple break points but she managed to do it.
Towards the end, her opponent faltered a bit and a chance presented itself. Those break points were the first ones she would get and they were actually match points. She took them to win the match and advance.
