Iga Swiatek wasn't able to explore much of Madrid the last time she was here because of COVID but she finally got the chance to do so this year.
It's been a while since Swiatek was in Madrid as the last time was when there was a pandemic going on. She didn't play at the event last year due to a minor injury but she's back this year. She's back and ready to explore the city which many consider to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Speaking about her experience so far in 2023, Swiatek said:
“The courts are pretty amazing, the whole facility is great. You feel like it’s new and
innovative and there’s a lot of technology, which is nice. And the fans
are really happy and enthusiastic. This is the first time I’m staying a
little bit closer to the city centre of Madrid so I’m able to do a bit
of sightseeing and the city is amazing. When I was here two years ago it
was during Covid, so we were stuck in the hotel. So right now I’m
really enjoying it and Madrid is really beautiful.”
On the tennis side of things, Swiatek added:
“I wouldn’t say it was easy.
Every match is tricky here,” said Swiatek of her duel with Pera, who
saved 9/13 break points in defeat. I’m happy that I played a
little bit better every day and I’m happy that I’m getting my rhythm.
Playing against a lefty is never easy so I think Bernarda really used
it. But I’m pretty happy that I was really disciplined and focused.”
