Sakkari St Petersburg final
The Spartan Maria Sakkari was betrayed by her body in her match against Laura Siegemund as the Greek was forced to retire in the 2nd set.
It wasn't a particularly good match from Sakkari, to begin with as the Greek player largely disappointed against a player she should have easily beaten. It's becoming a trend for Sakkari who has a reputation of choking in big matches as well generally crumbling under pressure. Today was neither a big pressure match yet the Greek was still unable to perform well.
Siegemund is a clay specialist and she is playing in front of her native crowd but she did not play too well. Neither did Sakkari but apparently, she had a physical issue to deal with during the match which forced her to retire in the 2nd set. Sakkari was not happy about it but it was pointless to continue on as Siegemund was implied much much better.
She outplayed Sakkari from the get-go and the Greek will now focus to get healthy in time for the rest of the clay season.
