Yulia Putintseva comes back from 3-6, 3-5 (and 4-5, 0-30) to beat Garbiñe Muguruza 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 and reach the last 16 in Rome vs. Jabeur. The celebration & handshake:
Garbine Muguruz and Leylah Fernandez followed up their Madrid Open early exits by doing the same thing in Rome.
Both played three sets, both won the opening set and both ultimately lost the match. Both of them also played noted clay-court specialists which might have something to do with the defeats but neither has been playing good tennis lately which is not surprising for Fernandez but worrisome for Muguruza. The Spaniard not only won the opening set vs Putintseva but she also serve for the match at 5-4 in the 2nd set.
The match went into the tiebreak and Putintseva proved much better winning 7-4. The final set was truly abysmal for Mugurza who did not even put up a decent fight. Putintseva smashed her opponent 6-1 in the final set extending her poor form ahead of the French Open.
Leylah Fernandez joined Muguruza in disappointing fans by losing to Kasatkina. The Russian is the better clay player and that's pretty evident. The loss itself is not terrible yet when the victory was so close, Fernandez must be disappointed. She played well in the first set winning it 6-3. The 2nd was not so good and Kasatkian won it 6-3 despite Fernandez having chances in it.
In the final one, Fernandez was up a break at 4-3 but gave it right back. We went into the tiebreak and the Russian proved better winning it 7-2 to move on. Good fight from Fernandez but ultimately she could not finish it out when she needed to.
